Description
Ancillae-Assumpta Academy has reimagined learning spaces to increase student engagement and success. Its campus currently maintains more than 900 iOS and macOS devices, which the community of 575 students uses to create, publish, connect, communicate, collaborate, research and problem-solve. Each faculty member has an iPad and MacBook Air device. Elementary school to junior high students are each equipped with an iPad and have access to Apple TV in their classrooms.
While much of this learning is incorporated in the classroom setting, Ancillae students have the added benefit of working in the school’s STEM Laboratory, which has served as a technology hub at the elementary school for nearly ten years. To increase student engagement, discovery, and depth of learning, augmented and virtual realities have been integrated throughout the curriculum. Multiple VR platforms are utilized to allow students to take virtual field trips to explore the world. The Academy also utilizes AR apps and devices to bring 3D objects to life, allowing students to explore the planets or see inside the human heart. Students use technology to create and share video messages with other Handmaid-sponsored schools around the world promoting authentic global connections.
Using a shared leadership model, administration, faculty, and students all play a meaningful role in the implementation of technology. Since 2012, the faculty at Ancillae has taken part in professional learning groups that take on a yearly theme. In 2018, topics included: AR/VR; Digital Storytelling; Gamification; Global Collaboration, and Project Based Learning/Design Thinking. Ancillae’s Tech Team – having grown from four to 100 members school-wide – is composed of student leaders who offer first-level tech support to classmates, teachers and administration. The Student Media Team annually produces three installments of a news program, Gator Life.
